the big idea (theme)
Bits & Pieces is a psychological thriller with a young woman as the protagonist ‘gifted’ with premonitions. The colours of these flashes add ‘bits” to who Tessa is (identity). Yet. ‘pieces’ of her are lost in the process. When screams and memories of the brutal murders of five women threaten to unravel Tessa, completely, she can’t just push it aside. Finding the killer and saving the next victim is in conflict with the complete destruction of her identity in the process.
the complexity of young adult fiction
Despite the adult nature of Bits & Pieces with topics of murders and serial killers l would nevertheless, categorize it as a YA (young adult) fiction book. Wikipedia describes this category as genre targeted to youth although approximately half of YA readers are adults.
The subject matter in this novel is themed around friendship, first love, and identity. Yet, the genre expands into the supernatural, suspense, mystery and even thriller categories. Further, it comes with a trigger warning that it contains some violence including that of a sexual nature.
With some coaxing, I spilled it all out. The flashes and what I’ve determined each color means. Red is pain. Purple gives me a skill or talent. Blue is a pleasant memory from someone. Orange is a painful memory. Yellow is what I presume to be a glimpse of the future. I explained that they only come when I touch someone, and then it’s only sometimes. I can go months without having a flash or I can have ten in a day. I have no control over it. Once I’ve had the flash though, whatever I got from it stays with me, becomes me, changes who I am. I explained that with each flash, I am redefined. I become parts of whoever I’ve touched. I am still me but with bits and pieces of them woven into my soul.Dawn Hosmer in Bits & pieces
4.5 hearts for Bits & Pieces by Dawn Hosmer
Although Bits & Pieces is different from what is ordinarily on my bookshelf as it is aimed at more towards youth/young adults I saw the merits for that particular audience. Psychological thrillers, topics around soul, mind, identity, identity, energy and transformation fit very well into the Art Matrix theme. Wonderful read for a cozy spot in front of the fireplace or a blanket on the beach!
