Power of Poetry

he who binds to himself, a joy, doth the winged life destroy … but he who kisses the joy as it flies by, lives in eternity’s sunrise

William Blake

There is a power in poetry that takes us to places deeper and more prophetic than do other genres. Yet, as symbolic of the matrix of life, poetry enhances life experiences when entwined with the prose of philosophy. When we actively engage with each, through reading and writing, we expand our personal growth and holistic well-being.

Yet, understanding the difference between the two sources of wisdom helps us to grasp each more fully into our lives. Hegel wrote that poetry provides the richest and most concrete expression of spiritual freedom (in contrast to sculpture, which in its classical form, gives us the purest ideal beauty) according to Stanford online. Poetry is capable of showing spiritual freedom both as concentrated inwardness and as action in space and time.

What is important in the art of poetry and what clearly marks it off from prose is thus the musical ordering of words themselves or versification. Hegel claims that there are three basic forms of poetry identified as epic, lyric and dramatic poetry. Hegel illuminated this crucial distinction between poetry and philosophical prose. Poetry does rise from the heart in the creation of wisdom through imaginative contemplation.

Einstein made a point of emphasizing the importance of the imagination in the creation of alternative ways of thinking and thus at the root of intelligence and human evolution.

Rumi and other masters of poetic endeavours gave us a means of understanding love, the soul and relationships.

It seems as though, and I feel strongly about this, that we need a system of core values and these can be solidified through both poetry and philosophy. I enthusiastically delve into both and my level of self awareness and personal growth as holistically evolved to a healthy state of well-being.
