Poetry Themes, Styles, Forms

Poetry is a form of literature which uses aesthetics and rhythmic qualities of language—such as phon-aesthetics, sound symbolism, and metre—to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, the prosaic ostensible meaning.

The application of different poetry themes, styles and forms brings abstractions to life with metaphorical language, visuals, descriptive language, and sensory details. Different poets engage with each in very unique ways. The following styles are described below and highlighted with an attached post of the work of a related poet’s.

Philosophical poetry starts with a statement of abstraction. Abstraction is the quality of dealing with ideas rather than events. In psychology, abstract thinking is considered higher-order thinking. This genre is expanded upon in the WSC Philosophical Poetry Workshop.

Stream of Consciousness styled poetry builds on the Philosophical style by eliminating the statement of the abstraction at the beginning of the poem. Rather, the poet uses language to imply the meaning or abstraction of the poem in a subtle manner.

Abstractions or themes (i.e. duty, aspiration, loss) with translations of the abstraction are developed through imagery. This is a staple-style for avant-garde publishers looking for a unique voice in free verse. The form provides a visual representation of the abstraction. An important step in discovering your unique and authentic voice is a study and experimentation with Confessional poetry. Almost all types of poetry sustain a certain degree of confessional techniques. Likewise, this style of poetry crosses genre lines. The key poetic devices are narration, imagery, metaphor and biography. More about this type of poetry in the WSC Confessional Poetry Writing Workshop.

Poetic devices include imagery, metaphor, verbal irony, research and analysis of an issue or theme. Notable poets in this genre include Robert Browning, John Keats, Michael Ondaatje, and Charles Baudelaire.

Lyric poetry is a genre that, unlike epic and dramatic poetry, does not attempt to tell a story but instead is of a more personal nature. Poems in this genre tend to be shorter, melodic, and contemplative. Rather than depicting characters and actions, it portrays the poet’s own feelings, states of mind, and perceptions. More about this type of poetry in the WSC Lyric Poetry Writing Workshop.

Reflects the style of poetry which best befits the content of my work.  My brand is more of a hybrid of a number of influences from the previously mentioned styles. More about this type of poetry in the WSC Lyric Poetry Writing Workshop.
